Before you go

  • Build a range from genuinely comparable live listings.
  • Adjust for condition, history, paperwork, repairs, and the quality of your evidence.
  • Use buyer response to refine the listing before making large price cuts.

A fair asking price is a supported range, not a number copied from the highest advertisement. Your car competes with vehicles that buyers can actually inspect in Lagos, so the comparison set needs to reflect model generation, age, condition, mileage, provenance, and area.

This guide avoids fixed market figures because asking prices and supply change. Use current listings and recent professional assessments on the day you price the vehicle.

Build a narrow comparison set

Start with cars from the same model generation and a close year range. Narrow further by engine, transmission, trim, provenance, mileage band, condition, ownership context, and Lagos location. A different generation or repaired example can distort the range even when the badge and model name match.

Record the asking price, listing date if visible, seller type, key condition claims, mileage, location, and photo quality for each comparable. Exclude obvious duplicates, incomplete listings, implausible prices, and cars that cannot be matched closely enough.

Close match
Prioritise the same generation, year band, drivetrain, trim, provenance, and condition.
Current evidence
Use listings that are live and locally relevant when you set or review the price.
Range, not average
Study the lower, middle, and upper parts of the credible set before choosing a position.

Adjust for the condition buyers can confirm

Separate cosmetic condition from mechanical condition. Clean paint and interior can improve presentation, but buyers also price tyres, cooling, air conditioning, suspension, warning lights, leaks, service due, and diagnostic findings. List known faults directly and estimate repair exposure honestly.

Evidence supports value. Service records, clear ownership history, both keys, complete papers, recent inspection results, matching tyres, and detailed photos reduce uncertainty. Unsupported phrases such as first body or perfect condition do not carry the same weight as inspectable proof.

Immediate repairs
Deduct realistic work a buyer must complete before dependable use.
Maintenance due
Account for tyres, fluids, battery, brakes, belts, or scheduled service approaching soon.
Evidence quality
Complete records and accurate disclosure can justify a stronger position within the range.

Choose your position in the range

Place the car near the lower end when it needs work, has incomplete history, must sell quickly, or competes with stronger examples. Use the middle when condition and evidence are typical. Reserve the upper end for cars with unusually strong, confirmable condition and history.

Decide the minimum acceptable amount privately. The public asking price can leave a reasonable negotiation gap, but an inflated buffer may reduce serious enquiries and make the listing look stale.

Fast sale
Compete on price only after the listing is complete and the comparison set is credible.
Normal timing
Price near similar cars and let accurate facts distinguish the listing.
Premium position
Show why the car deserves it with records, inspection access, condition, and complete photos.

Improve the listing before cutting deeply

Weak response can come from poor photos, missing facts, an unclear title, a wrong Lagos area, slow replies, or a price problem. Fix the presentation and disclosure issues first so the next week of response measures the car rather than the listing quality.

Photograph the exterior from consistent angles in daylight, then add the cabin, dashboard, engine bay, boot, tyres, keys, and any disclosed defect. State year, make, model, trim where known, mileage, transmission, condition, area, service context, papers available, and inspection access.

Views but no messages
Recheck price, trust gaps, description clarity, and the first three photos.
Messages but no viewings
Review response speed, location clarity, seller answers, and inspection access.
Viewings but no offers
Ask whether condition, documents, or undisclosed repair costs are changing the decision.

Review the price with evidence

Set a review date instead of changing the price after every message. Record views, serious enquiries, viewing requests, completed viewings, offers, and repeated objections. Compare the car again with new or changed listings at that point.

When reducing the price, make one deliberate change and keep the listing facts stable. A clear history of edits helps you learn whether the new price changed buyer behaviour instead of creating confusion about the vehicle itself.

Low traffic
Check title, filters, photos, and category placement before assuming price is the only issue.
Consistent objection
Investigate repeated concerns about condition, papers, area, or price rather than dismissing them.
New evidence
Update the listing when an inspection, repair, service, or document change affects value.

Working checklist

  1. Collect current Lagos listings for genuinely similar cars.
  2. Exclude duplicates, incomplete listings, and implausible outliers.
  3. Record condition, mileage, trim, provenance, area, and seller type.
  4. List immediate repairs and maintenance due soon.
  5. Gather service, ownership, document, key, and inspection evidence.
  6. Choose a lower, middle, or upper-range position for a stated reason.
  7. Set your minimum acceptable amount privately.
  8. Publish complete daylight photos and decision-ready facts.
  9. Review views, messages, viewings, offers, and objections on a set date.
  10. Change one pricing variable at a time and record the result.
